Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics

Begins Academic Year 2010 - 2011

Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor for the Department of Physics to begin September 1, 2010.

We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in physics, but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate must have a record of successful physics teaching at the TA level or beyond, and be comfortable teaching with modern laboratory instructional equipment and software. Experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives is also desirable.

The department anticipates a continued vacancy for several more years, and the successful candidate will be considered for continuation into subsequent years. The position should be attractive to recent or imminent Ph.D. recipients who are considering a career at a liberal arts college or small university. This department considers the mentoring of new faculty to be an important part of visiting appointments, and has a successful record in this regard.

Primary responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters will include approximately 12 contact hours per week in lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory and upper level for various audiences. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to teach a course during our interim January Term (a one month short course). There will be some opportunities for visiting faculty to collaborate in undergraduate research in optics, acoustics, and other fields, although research activity is not an expectation of these positions. A commitment to teaching is important.

The Physics Department offers a comprehensive major and graduates an average of 15 students per year, of whom a very high percentage pursue graduate and professional degrees. The department is staffed by 6.5 FTE faculty, and is well-housed and equipped in the 64,000 square-foot Olin Hall of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.

To apply, send letter of application, complete curriculum vitae, transcripts (photocopies acceptable), and three letters of professional recommendation. At least one letter must be from a person who can supply an informed evaluation of the applicant's teaching experience. Address all materials to:
